Orthodontic Treatment Options in Las Vegas

The UNLV Orthodontic Clinic offers a wide range of affordable orthodontic treatment options in Las Vegas. We believe every person deserves a healthy smile, so we are proud to provide our community with not just affordable care, but excellent care. We use the latest available treatment options from regular braces to clear, removable aligners like Invisalign.

Years ago, patients had only one choice for braces, the iconic fixed metal braces bonded to the teeth, but so much has improved with technology. There are now many different types of orthodontic treatment options, so we help patients determine the best options for their smile and they can choose the best fit for their lifestyle.

It is important to know that there are two main types of orthodontic appliances used today:

  • Fixed appliances
  • Removable appliances

Traditional metal braces are the most commonly used fixed appliances that are permanently affixed to the teeth for the duration of the treatment process using special cement. Removable appliances on the other hand, like transparent aligners, are designed to be worn for a set number of hours each day and can be removed by the wearer as needed. Removable appliances can be used to treat many orthodontic problems running the gamut from mild to moderate. However, fixed appliances are usually needed for more complex problems.

Metal Braces

feature_tob.jpg Compared to the metal braces used in the past, today's modern metal braces are smaller, more attractive and more comfortable. Made of high quality stainless steel, metal braces are the most common type of fixed appliances. These braces feature metal bands and brackets that are bonded to the teeth. A thin archwire runs through the brackets to gently move teeth into the desired position prescribed by the orthodontist. The archwire can be fixed to the brackets by elastics, metal ties or other types of clasps.

Metal braces are affordable, reliable and effective. This is why these braces remain popular today among patients of all ages. Patients wearing metal braces may be able to personalize their treatment by using colorful elastics to make treatment more fun.

Clear Braces

feature_clarity.jpgTransparent ceramic braces are far less noticeable than traditional metal braces, making them popular among image-conscious patients. Ceramic braces use the same technology as conventional braces except the brackets are made of a translucent material so they blend in with the natural color of the teeth. Because ceramic braces are hardly noticeable, many adults choose this treatment option.

There are a few drawbacks to ceramic braces to be aware of. For one thing, the brackets are not as durable as metal brackets due to them being made from a ceramic material. These braces are also more costly than their metal counterparts and the elastic bands used with ceramic braces can become stained between orthodontic visits. However, in spite of these disadvantages, many patients choose ceramic braces because they appreciate how discreet this treatment option is.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces utilize a unique self-ligation technique that uses lighter forces and reduced friction to result in more comfortable and shorter treatment. Self-ligating braces eliminate the need for elastics or metal ties as the specially designed brackets hold the archwire in place using built-in clips. This allows the archwire to move smoothly through the brackets for efficient and comfortable tooth movement. Because self-ligating braces work very efficiently, fewer adjustments are required, making this a convenient treatment option. And since self-ligating braces use no ties and the brackets are small, it is easy to maintain proper oral hygiene throughout the treatment process. All the benefits of self-ligating braces contribute to a faster, more comfortable and pleasant treatment process.
