First Visit

Your Las Vegas Orthodontic Team

The orthodontic faculty and students at the UNLV Orthodontic Clinic look forward to meeting you at your first appointment! During your visit with us, we will help you get acquainted with our office and learn about your treatment and the orthodontic options available to you. Because each patient has different needs, we tailor our treatment to each individual patient we serve while giving you the personal attention you deserve.

Your first visit will consist of an initial examination and a follow-up discussion of your potential treatment options. This important first appointment will provide us with insight into your specific orthodontic needs and desires. It will also allow the orthodontist to determine if this is the right time to begin treatment.

First Orthodontic Evaluation Should Occur by Age 7

It is important for parents to know that the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children receive their first orthodontic screening by the age of 7. While 7 may seem like an early age to take your child to the orthodontist, by this age, the first adult molars typically have erupted to establish the back bite and the front teeth have begun to emerge as well. This is when an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. While orthodontic treatment may not be necessary at this early age, this first examination provides both the timely detection of any problems and the greater opportunity for effective treatment when and if it is deemed necessary.

Learn About Your Options & Get Your Questions Answered

One of the main goals of your first appointment is to make sure you have the information you need to understand your treatment plan. The following questions about the basics of orthodontic treatment will be covered during your first visit with us:

  • Do I have a problem or issue that orthodontics can address?
  • Is treatment necessary now or should treatment be delayed until appropriate growth, tooth eruption or other factors have occurred?
  • What type of treatment will be used to correct the problem?
  • What types of orthodontic treatment options do I have?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What are my payment options?

After we have evaluated your records, we will sit down with you to explain every aspect of your orthodontic treatment in detail. We will provide you with a complete clinical diagnosis that includes the nature of the problem, a written summary of our findings and a detailed plan that outlines your treatment, goals and estimated fees. We encourage questions from both the patient and parents and always take the time to answer any questions you have.
